Constant, Clear-Fluid Runny Nose: Causes and Treatment - Healthline

Image
Just about everyone has experienced a runny nose at some point. This symptom can have many different causes and characteristics. For example, a runny nose may only last a short time in some people and may be constant in others. The color of the nasal discharge can vary as well. In some cases, you may have a runny nose with clear fluid that's constant or persistent. Below, we'll explore some of the causes of a constant runny nose with clear fluid. We'll also address what you can do to ease your symptoms, and signs that it may be time to see your doctor. A runny nose happens due to an increase in the production of nasal mucus. While a runny nose can have many causes, it often occurs due to inflammation of the tissues inside your nose. This is known as rhinitis. The extra fluid that's produced can drain from your nose, down the back of your throat (postnasal drip), or both. While nasal mucus can have a variety of colors, the medical term for a runny nose with thin, clear f...

The 1918 pandemic mistake that changed medicine forever - National Geographic

Image
In 1892 a prominent German bacteriologist named Richard Pfeiffer made a mistake—one that would have an enormous impact on the pandemic of 1918 and the next century of medicine. In the late 19th century scientists had begun to draw connections between microorganisms and human illnesses. But no one had convincingly linked a specific pathogen to influenza, which back then was essentially a catchall term for a suite of infectious respiratory symptoms that had swept through populations for millennia. To solve the mystery, Pfeiffer was examining sputum from 31 patients who had died in the flu pandemic of 1889-90, which killed about a million people worldwide. That's when he discovered a new type of bacterium. "The influenza bacilli appear as tiny little rodlets," he reported in the British Medical Journal in January 1892, and he found them exclusively in pandemic victims. "In view of these results, I consider myself justified in pronouncing the bacilli just described to b...

Is there a Plan B weight limit, and is it a concern? - Medical News Today

Image
Some studies suggest that the active ingredient in Plan B may work less effectively at standard doses in people with a body weight of over 155 pounds (70.3 kilograms). However, individuals above this body weight can still take it. Plan B contains the hormone levonorgestrel. According to trials, Plan B One-Step can prevent 84% of pregnancies after unprotected sex. The advocacy group Planned Parenthood recommends that people with a higher body weight consider other emergency contraception methods, such as the copper intrauterine device (IUD). Scientists suggest these are just as effective in all people, regardless of body weight. Plan B does not have a weight limit that prevents people with a higher body mass index (BMI) from taking it. It is still safe to use in individuals with a higher body weight, and it will still substantially reduce the chance of pregnancy when a person uses it within 3 days of having unprotected sex. However, Planned Parenthood recommends that people who weigh ov...
