Bryson City Residents Seek Solutions After Sudden Closure Of Local Pharmacy
BRYSON CITY, N.C. (WLOS) — For some, the Bryson City Pharmacy closing its doors after nearly two decades in business is causing concern.
"I think it caught everybody off guard," Garrett Lagan said. "I don't know that anybody got more than a couple days' notice that this sale was happening."
Lagan organized a community meeting Friday night. He estimated about 10 people attended to work through solutions after the sudden change.
Walgreens acquired Bryson City Pharmacy's and Robbinsville Pharmacy's customer prescription files and related pharmacy inventory, according to a statement provided by Walgreens.
"I want local choice for everything," Lagan said. "I like having local options. I don't want to have to drive to Sylva, or Franklin, or Hayesville to try and go to a pharmacy."
In the same statement, Walgreens added:
Customers do not need to take any action. Their pharmacy files will automatically transfer to Walgreens. They will receive notification in the mail along with details about their prescriptions."
But according to Lagan, it hasn't been that easy for his neighbor, who is still trying to get his son's antibiotic prescription filled.
"He got the call saying, 'Hey it was ready.' So, when he did finally get there to get it picked up, the Walgreens pharmacy told him that it had been picked up by somebody else," Lagan said. "They took that antibiotic, and they filled somebody else's script with it."
Lagan said people he's spoken with are unhappy about the lack of notice, as well as having on-the-ground issues like long wait times and traffic congestion.
"People are in the drive-through, lined up all the way to the entrance of the parking lot. So, it's been a bit of an issue," he said.
With only one show in town now, Lagan created a petition, seeking the attention of North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein.
"When the national chain buys out the local competition, are any antitrust laws being broken when that happens?" Lagan asked. "Because we only have one pharmacy in town."
Stein's office has not responded to News 13's request for comment.

Pharmacy Tech Arrested For Trafficking Drugs Through Walgreens Drive-thru, Police Say
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE/Gray News) – A former pharmacy technician at a Walgreens in Kentucky has been arrested after police say she illegally distributed drugs through the pharmacy's drive-thru.
Mellany Rodriguez, 19, was arrested Monday for the alleged crimes that police say happened between May and August 2022.
Rodriguez was working at Walgreens on S. Third Street in Louisville during that time.
According to arrest documents, an internal investigation began after management discovered that more than 21,000 schedule II drug doses were missing from the Walgreens store.
After looking through surveillance footage, police say Rodriguez was spotted deleting prescriptions that had already been filled from the pharmacy's computer system and then handing them out to people in the Walgreens drive-thru who didn't order those prescriptions.
Records say surveillance footage and deletion reports showed that Rodriguez was likely responsible for 3,060 missing doses from the pharmacy, totaling $5,421.60. It's not clear from the arrest report what happened to the other 18,000 doses that went missing.
Rodriguez is now being held at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections on several felony charges, including unlawful access to a computer, theft by unlawful taking or disposition of a controlled substance, trafficking of a controlled substance and criminal falsification of medical records.
