Why Do My Eyes Water When I Lie Down? Causes, Treatment - Healthline

Image
Your tears help keep the surface of your eyes moist and clear of harmful debris. Tears are produced by lacrimal glands and drain through ducts on the inner side of your eye that run to your nasal passages. Any condition that increases tear production or interferes with tear drainage can cause a buildup of water in your eyes. You're particularly likely to notice your eyes watering when you're lying down since gravity can't guide water to your tear ducts. Keep reading to learn some of the specific reasons why your eyes may water when you lie down. It's typical for tears to build up more in your eyes when you're lying down as opposed to sitting or standing upright. Health conditions that cause watery eyes or a blockage of your tear duct can also contribute to excessive tearing. Effect of gravity Your tear drainage system has active and passive parts. When you blink, your muscles create negative pressure in your tear ducts. This pressure draws tears inside. The passive ...

Dutch trials begin on bird flu vaccination in first year-round outbreak - DutchNews.nl - DutchNews.nl

Photo: Depositphotos.com A trial has begun into whether three potential bird flu vaccines could protect farmed animals from a disease that is now a year-round threat. Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) in Lelystad has been asked by the Dutch agriculture minister to conduct trials into vaccines for the H5 avian flu virus in laying hens. The first results from the three-month trial are expected in December. Expert Nancy Beerens said that the virus, which typically arrived with migrating water birds from Siberia, has now spread to other breeds and is present in the summer months when it used to disappear. 'Our summers used to be free of bird flu infections,' she said in a press release. 'This year we saw for the first time that the bird flu season did not end with the departure of migratory birds in April. The virus has been infecting birds that summer in our country, which means that poultry farms started the summer with bird flu.' Largest cull Despite culling more ...

Is It a Cold? The Flu? Or COVID? - AARP

Image
Getty Images En español It starts with a sniffle, then it moves to a cough. Maybe you get a sore throat or achy muscles, or spike a fever. Is it a cold? Perhaps the flu? Could it be COVID? It's been more than two years since COVID-19 burst on the scene, adding yet another virus-causing illness that could be to blame for your feeling crummy. After all, the common cold, the flu and COVID-19 share a similar list of symptoms. Further complicating the guessing game are the COVID-19 vaccines and boosters, which can fight off some of the disease's most severe symptoms, making it even more difficult to identify the culprit behind...

Comprehensive structural assignment of glycosaminoglycan oligo- and polysaccharides by protein nanopore - Nature.com

Image
Abstract Glycosaminoglycans are highly anionic functional polysaccharides with information content in their structure that plays a major role in the communication between the cell and the extracellular environment. The study presented here reports the label-free detection and analysis of glycosaminoglycan molecules at the single molecule level using sensing by biological nanopore, thus addressing the need to decipher structural information in oligo- and polysaccharide sequences, which remains a major challenge for glycoscience. We demonstrate that a wild-type aerolysin nanopore can detect and characterize glycosaminoglycan oligosaccharides with various sulfate patterns, osidic bonds and epimers of uronic acid residues. Size discrimination of tetra- to icosasaccharides from heparin, chondroitin sulfate and dermatan sulfate was investigated and we show that different contents and distributions of sulfate groups can be detected. Remarkably, differences in α/β anomerization and 1,4/1,3 osi...
