State closes out mildest flu season in recent history - KPCnews.com

Image
INDIANAPOLIS — The 2020-21 flu season will go down as one of the mildest in recent history, although not necessarily the mildest ever. Flu activity in Indiana never rose above "low" levels and the state recorded just five deaths attributable to flu, well below the typical annual average. That trend wasn't just seen in Indiana but nationwide as health officials contribute a year of public health precautions linked to stemming the spread of COVID-19 as a main driver for severely suppressing flu activity. Going into this flu season there were expectations of a very mild impact after southern hemisphere nations, which have their winter during the north's summer months, had minor flu impact during the initial onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-2020. In the final week of flu surveillance in Indiana, the state once again recorded "minimal" flu activity, with 557 new instances of "influenza-like illness" logged at surveillance sites across the...

Teens and adults miss 26 million doses of CDC-recommended vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic, study finds - USA TODAY

Image
CLOSE Education Secretary Miguel Cardona visited a COVID-19 vaccine clinic at a Michigan community college to highlight the White House's efforts to encourage similar efforts elsewhere (June 8) AP Domestic As Americans get vaccinated against the coronavirus, a report published Wednesday found teens and adults may have missed millions of routine vaccinations recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2020. The study, commissioned by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and conducted by Avalere Health, analyzed vaccine claims from January through November 2020 and compared them with the same timeframe in 2019. Researchers found teens and adults may have missed more than 26 million doses of recommended vaccines in 2020, which includes 8.8 million missed adolescent vaccines and 17.2 million missed adult vaccine doses. "Millions of people have been immunized to protect against COVID, but many are missing protection against other di...

Delta variant Covid symptoms ‘include headaches, sore throat and runny nose’ - The Guardian

Headaches, a sore throat and a runny nose are the most common symptoms associated with the UK's most widely established Covid variant, researchers have said. The data, collected as part of the app-based Zoe Covid symptom study, suggests that the Delta variant first detected in India feels like a "bad cold", according to Tim Spector, a professor of genetic epidemiology at King's College London, who is leading the work. "Covid is … acting differently now, it's more like a bad cold," he said. "People might think they've just got some sort of seasonal cold, and they still go out to parties … we think this is fuelling a lot of the problem. So, what's really important to realise is that since the start of May, we've been looking at the top symptoms in all the app users, and they're not the same as they were. So, the number one symptom is headache … followed by sore throat, runny nose and fever." According to the NHS, the cla...

I have a physical dependency on Xanax. The drug's dark side isn't discussed enough - Salon

Image
My mentor was dying and I had no idea what to say. It was Spring 2018 and John Pettegrew, Lehigh University's chair of history and my dissertation adviser, had just received a call from his doctor. We were meeting to discuss my dissertation proposal; I'd completed my coursework years earlier with a 3.8 GPA and had done well on my exams. Every previous conversation I'd had with Pettegrew had been stimulating and enthusiastic on both ends. Because he was kind, he reiterated how much he believed in my proposed topic and, knowing that I'm autistic, made a point of understanding neurodiversity. I had switched advisers precisely because our minds were simpatico. Yet in this meeting, for the first time ever, I began to wonder if Pettegrew's cancer diagnosis might thwart that fate. He asked that I leave the room so he could take his personal call. I did so, of course, but I could tell as soon as I returned that the news had not been good. All of the energy seemed drained ...

Rumination Disorder Treatment: Prescriptions, Therapies - Verywell Health

Image
Rumination disorder is a feeding and eating disorder and a functional gastroduodenal disorder where a person experiences frequent and effortless regurgitation of food that they have recently eaten. The regurgitation is unconscious but believed to be a learned behavior. The person will re-chew and swallow or spit out the food that is regurgitated. Treatments for rumination disorder use behavioral, psychological, and quality-of-life interventions, as well as the medical management of a person's symptoms. The goals of rumination disorder treatment are stopping regurgitating behavior, reducing mealtime stress, and making it easier for a person to engage in social, school, or work activities. It is very important to involve family and caregivers in treatment for rumination disorder because it often occurs in children, teens, and adults with intellectual disabilities. Here is an overview of how rumination disorder is treated. FatCamera / Getty Images P...
